Artaud in China

Artaud: un portrait en décomposition played to nearly sold-out houses as part of the Shanghai Dramatic Arts Centre’s ACT International Theatre Festival We were amazed and encouraged by the warm response from the Chinese audience. Our opening show was followed by a lively talk-back that transformed into a discussion about Artaud’s Theatre Of Cruelty, the nature of catharsis and the role of theatre in our lives as a purging agent for negative forces…it was very humbling and stimulating to talk to people who we weren’t sure would have any connection with Artaud and to hear how the show affected them. Many huge, warm thanks to the SDAC for inviting us and to Michele Smith, Coleen MacPherson, Andre Du Toit & Kim Purtell for making it happen. And special thanks to Dean Gilmour for being a huge supporter and inspiration. Stay tuned for more touring news about Artaud as we are hoping to go on the road in June…

@ the Lit.Live! Festival in Mumbai

Earlier this month Spent played to an excited audience of 800 at the NCPA in Mumbai to close off the 2nd annual Lit.Live! Festival.
We had the honour to share the stage with many great Indian writers, such as Vikram Seth, and many thanks go out to the Canadian Government, QTP theatre productions (our amazing tech team in India) and Anil Dharker, festival director, for making it all happen.

Arif Mirabdolbaghi in The Double

Dostoevsky, mime and double bass…

TheatreRUN’s latest original creation, The Double, will be debuting at the Factory Studio Theatre in February 2012.

Music, Mime and Madness collide in a schizophrenic feast of music and images in our new adaptation of Dostoevsky’s classic novella about a man driven mad by the appearance of his doppelganger.

The Double is created in collaboration with Arif Mirabdolbaghi, bassist from the award winning Canadian band Protest The Hero.

We are pleased to announce Spent has been nominated for a Capital Critic’s Circle award for Best Production in Ottawa after our sold-out run at the Undercurrents Festival last February.

SPENT takes Edinburgh Fringe by storm!

For the month of August Ravi Jain and myself played Spent at the Edinburgh International Fringe Festival. The show garnered rave reviews and we sold out our entire run!! We had a great, physically, mentally and spiritually exhausting time…

Many thanks to all of those who came to see the fundraiser in Toronto at the Young Centre before we left and those who either donated or sent well-wishes. We are so very lucky to have such a supportive community behind us!

SPENT physical comedy workshop!

Thursday July 28 2:30-6pm

This special masterclass/workshop will introduce participants to the physical comedy techniques used in the creation of SPENT.
We will touch on aspects of Bouffon, Clown and how to use mimicry and mockery to create characters and construct comic scenes.

Summerworks Bailout

It is our great pleasure to announce that we are donating profits from our July 22 performance of SPENT at the Young Centre towards helping Summerworks make up their budget shortfall.

Summerworks is one of the most important, vibrant festivals in the country nurturing new, independent work and acting as a launching pad for fledgling productions.

This summer they lost a large portion of their federal funding and they have asked the community to help them ensure that they can continue to flourish and function effectively within the Canadian theatre ecology.

The Canadian theatre community is up in arms and the story has been all over the news for the past while.
